Options for securing the home – Part II

August 1, 2008 By Hanna

In one of my earlier posts I started talking about the products I found through X10 for home security.  I must say that it really is interesting to get out there and look at what is available. To be quite honest, I always thought the only do-it-yourself kind of security involved a dog or a 12-gauge shotgun.  I had no idea one could easily and cheaply install door and window sensors, motion detectors and even a system to call the owner (or whoever it’s programmed to call) when they’re away and there’s a break in!

I want to take a little more time to delve into the other options available through X10 and The Home Automation Store.  It really does help me to get it all straight in my mind when I write it out and maybe it will end up helping someone else who is looking for affordable home security.

The Big Red Button (KR15A) seems like it could be very helpful, especially in the home of an elderly person or someone who is not able to move quickly. These buttons can easily be placed in different rooms throughout the house.  When there is a problem the button can be pushed, and held for 4 seconds) and then it will trigger the main X10 Security System in your home sending of sirens and flashing lights.  This system can also be tied in with an outside monitoring company if wanted so the authorities can be notified.  I’m thinking this probably wouldn’t be good for my home with little ones but I can definantly see a plus for the elderly!

Having a siren go off behind you when you’re speeding can send your heart beat through the roof, I can imagine what it would do to a person when they’re trying to break into a home. The SH10A Home Security Small PowerHorn Siren works with all the X10 home security devises to scare any intruder away.  The PowerHorn is designed as an accessory to the (DS7000) Protector Plus Security System which I talked about a little bit in Part I of this article.

The (LM465) Lamp Module is also included in the Protector Plus Security System.  This is what makes your lamp(s) flash.  Once the Red Button or a sensor is set off, the lamp module will make the lamp start flashing on and off.  Add that to the loud siren, and we’ve really got a recipe for scarring someone!

I’m starting to thing this home security thing could be a lot of fun while at the same time securing my house from intruders.  I’ve gotta say though, I really hope I’m not the one who forgets to turn off the motion detector before walking into the wrong room.  I’d much prefer to get a good laugh when it happens to my husband!
