Put Your Thoughts on Ice

Good Old Fashioned Ice Cream

November 1, 2008 By Hanna

Our family seems to go through ice cream in spurts.  We eat it like it’s going out of style for a month and then we’ll have ice cream that sits around in the freezer for a month and nobody wants to eat it.  I guess you could say the one ice cream flavor that works for every member of the family is vanilla.  Some of us like nuts but others don’t, some like chocolate but others aren’t big on it and so on.  At least with vanilla everyone can have the topping they want to make it fit their particular tastes.

This summer I decided to try a few different kinds of ice cream.  At one point my husband was really on a diet kick.  Drinks had to be sugar free, we needed to exercise and so on.  Well, I was standing there looking at ice cream in Walmart and decided maybe he’d want to try sugar free ice cream too.   We both like Butter Pecan ice cream so I thought we’d give it a try.  I can sum that experience up in one word, “Nasty!!”  That had to have been the worst ice cream, if you can really call it that, I’ve ever put in my mouth.

There wasn’t any creaminess to the ice.  The stuff was hard and the taste certainly wasn’t a pleasant one.  Needless to say, that box of ice cream sat around in the freezer forever.  I think my husband and I both managed a few bites of it and that was all we could handle.  In my opinion, dessert should be a enjoyable to eat, not a chore!

Another time during the summer I decided to give the Turkey Hill Duetto Ice Cream a try.  I enjoy root bear floats and when I saw the Root Bear Duetto it struck my fancy.  I must say it was interesting.  The vanilla ice cream was good.  The root bear venice ice, well, that was okay.  I thought the root bear flavoring was just overwhelming and too sweet.  I was able to eat at least half the box of this kind (it was definitely better than sugar free) but again wasn’t very impressed.

I think our family just needs to stick to good old fashioned ice cream.  We like it creamy and we like it with real sugar.  I wouldn’t say we’re old fashioned in all our ways.  We like the world of technology with computers, home automation, wireless X10 products,  and I can’t forget my wonderful Tom Tom GPS!  Technology is a very big part of everyday life in our household.  We even use technology when we’re making food.  When it comes to the food we eat though, I’ll stick to the good old fashioned ice cream that actually uses milk and sugar and all those tasty, fattening products!
